IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, is designed to assess the language ability of candidates who need to study or work where English is used as the language of communication. IELTS is required for entry to university in the UK and many other countries, including Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, and the USA. It is also recognized by professional bodies, immigration authorities and other government agencies. 

 

There are two versions of the IELTS Test: the Academic Version and the General Training Version:

The Academic Version is intended for those who want to enroll in universities  and other institutions of higher education and for professionals such as medical doctors and nurses who want to study or practice in an English-speaking country.The General Training Version is intended for those planning to carry put non-academic training or to gain work experience, or for immigration purposes.

 

The test has four sections:  Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. All candidates take the same Listening and Speaking Modules..

 

The Modules are taken in the following order:

 

LISTENING

4 sections, 40 items
30 minutes

 

ACADEMIC READING

3 sections, 40 items
60 minutes

 

GENERAL TRAINING READING

3 sections, 40 items
60 minutes

ACADEMIC WRITING

2 tasks (150 & 250 words)
60 minutes

 

GENERAL TRAINING WRITING

2 tasks (150 & 250 words)
60 minutes

 

SPEAKING

personal interview with examiner

15 minutes

 

 

 

Total Test Time: 2 3/4 hours

 

Level and scores

Multi-level. You get a score between 1 and 9. Half scores such as 6.5 are possible. Universities often demand an IELTS score of 6 or 7. They may also demand a minimum score in each of the 4 sections.
